Anti Inflammatory Activity Of Macrolides

A study with live rats and cultured cells from rats to see if macrolide antibiotics reduce inflammation in lungs.

Macrolide Antibiotic- inhibits protein synthesis

In Vivo: live male rats
- Removed adrenal glands
*injected with carrageenin (induces inflammation in rats)
*Treated with Macrolide
- negative control performed a mock surgery
*Treated with sterile saline

In Vitro:
-cultured alveolar macrophages from rats
-exposed macrophages to LPS (to induce inflammatory response)
-then treated them w/ macrolides
-looked at cytokine secretion (TNF and IL-6 for example)
